Opening (2022)

The Bird Comedy Theater opened in 2022 in the Crossroads Arts District, occupying space in the historic Hemingway Building at 103 W. 19th Street in downtown Kansas City. Co-founder Bobby Miller Jr., a second-generation entertainer born and raised in Kansas City, launched the venue to bring a range of comedy forms including improv, sketch, and stand-up to the neighborhood.

Programming and Recognition

The Bird Comedy Players serve as the resident ensemble, and the Bird presents a broad slate of shows including its long-running Anarchy Fun Time Show and other variety formats alongside the Bird Watching Film Festival and free First Friday Comedy events. The venue has been voted Kansas City's number one comedy club every year since 2023 by The Pitch Best of KC awards and named Best Theater Company and Best Open Mic beginning in 2024.

The Bird Comedy Theater programs long-form and short-form improv alongside sketch, stand-up, and variety shows. Its training offerings are built for a range of learners from beginners to advanced students, as well as professionals and corporate clients seeking applied communication skills.

The Bird Comedy Theater presents The Bird Comedy Show and The Bird Musical Comedy Show as its flagship weekly long-form and musical-improv productions, performed by the Bird Comedy Players on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM. The Truck Noises Show and The Anarchy Fun Time Show are additional recurring ensemble productions with distinct improvisational styles. Later in the evening, the theater offers Whose Game Is It Anyway?, a short-form games showcase, alongside The Improv Show and Hump Day as mid-week programming. The Bird House is a late-night ensemble slot, and Stand-Up at The Bird features local and visiting comedians. Free First Friday Comedy opens the venue to the public once a month at no charge, while the Bird Watching Film Festival is a recurring specialty event.
