Nathan Fielder

Fielder was born in Vancouver's Dunbar neighborhood to Eric and Deb Fielder, both social workers in workers' compensation services. At Point Grey Secondary School, he joined the school's improv comedy group, where his teammates included Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen later recalled that Fielder's deadpan approach was evident from their earliest performances together: he would say nothing throughout a sketch, then deliver a single line at the end that earned the biggest laugh by recontextualizing the entire scene. Their team placed third in a national high school improv competition.

Fielder graduated from the University of Victoria in 2005 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and worked briefly at a brokerage firm before pursuing comedy full-time. He enrolled in Humber College's one-year comedy writing and performance program in Toronto, completing it in 2006. That same year, he received the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award, a distinction given annually to an emerging Canadian comedian.

His early television career began as a writer and junior producer for Canadian Idol (2006), where executive producer Michael Donovan noticed his work and hired him as a field correspondent for the CBC series This Hour Has 22 Minutes (2007 to 2009). On that show, Fielder developed the recurring segment Nathan on Your Side, a deadpan consumer advocacy feature that became the conceptual foundation for his later work.

In 2013, Comedy Central premiered Nathan for You, which Fielder co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in across four seasons and 32 episodes through 2017. The show presented Fielder as an inept business consultant offering absurd strategies to real struggling small businesses, with each episode built on improvisational interactions with unsuspecting participants. A February 2014 stunt involving a parody cafe called Dumb Starbucks attracted national media coverage and demonstrated the show's capacity to generate real-world events from comedic premises.

Fielder served as executive producer on How to with John Wilson (HBO, 2020 to 2023), mentoring Wilson's observational documentary approach. His HBO series The Rehearsal premiered in July 2022, with a second season arriving in April 2025. The show orchestrates hyper-realistic rehearsals for participants facing difficult life situations, constructing elaborate physical environments and hiring actors to simulate outcomes before they occur.

He co-created The Curse (Showtime, 2023) with Benny Safdie, a scripted dark comedy starring alongside Emma Stone. His voice acting credits include Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, and Bob's Burgers. Outside entertainment, Fielder founded Summit Ice Apparel, a nonprofit outdoor clothing brand that has generated millions in donations for Holocaust education organizations.
